What does a real Operations Manager in 3PL actually do?

Our Operations Managers in Lelystad are at the heart of our 3PL operation. Working in a multi-cultural environment, with responsibility for up to 10 Warehouse Managers (and their teams) across 150+ colleagues on shift, you make sure we hit client SLAs every day—on time, in full, and to spec—while keeping people safe, engaged, and set up to win.

The Operations (OPS) function plays a pivotal role beyond day-to-day execution of Day over Day strategy, contributing significantly to mid and long-term operational development. While ensuring effective delivery of DoD priorities, Operations Managers also look beyond the immediate 24-hour horizon, focusing instead on shaping weekly operational strategy. This includes developing and aligning weekly operational plans in close collaboration with the Head of Operations and the Workforce team, ensuring both short-term performance and long-term success are achieved.

Let’s talk about a normal day in Lelystad

Your morning starts one hour before your team arrives with a handover from the previous shift—what shipped, what didn’t, what’s at risk, and what the priorities are for the day. You run a quick, clear start‑of‑shift huddle with your Warehouse Managers: safety, service, volume, constraints, and actions. By mid‑morning you’re on the floor—walking the operation, clearing blockers, reallocating labour when volume or staffing shifts, and keeping a close eye on the numbers that matter (service level/SLA adherence, sort/pack rate, and quality).

Throughout the day you partner with Workforce Planning, Transport, Commercial, and HR to manage change in real time—late inbound, urgent stores requests, stock discrepancies, absenteeism—so there are no surprises and the operation stays on track. No two days look the same, and that’s exactly why you enjoy it.

You’re the person who:

✅ Protects client service by managing priorities, risk, and escalations before they become missed SLAs

✅ Makes fast, practical calls when the plan changes (late inbound, carrier cut‑offs, urgent orders, staffing gaps)

✅ Leads through people—coaching Warehouse Managers to own performance, quality, and engagement with their teams

✅ Turns pressure into progress through continuous improvement, standard work, and clear accountability

This role isn’t about sitting behind a desk. It’s about ownership, visibility and impact — shaping how the operation runs every single day.
